Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is the second oldest university in Malaysia and one of the leading universities in the country. Its main thrust in the development of higher education are in the fields of Natural Sciences, Applied Sciences, Medical and Health Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Building Sciences & Technology, Social Sciences, Humanities and Education.
USM is the only APEX University in Malaysia, a special status accorded by the Ministry of Higher Education. The APEX (Accelerated Programme for Excellence) agenda among others is to propel the university to be one of the best institutions of higher learning in the world. USM is also the premium Research Intensive University in the country and has adopted an innovative approach to higher education, departing from the traditional faculty system to the broad-based school system. A university that champions sustainability issues, USM has 26 schools, offering undergraduate and postgraduate education and research-based studies to both local and international students.
Another 17 Centres of Excellence (CoE) and 2 Higher Institution Centres of Excellence (HICoE) also offer research and innovation opportunities to prospective researchers, as well as to provide for the development, application and the dissemination of knowledge. USM has 4 campuses, with the main campus is located in the tropical island of Penang, just a few kilometres outside the World Heritage Site of George Town. The Health Campus in Kubang Kerian, located in the east coast state of Kelantan, focuses on health and medical studies while the Engineering Campus offers various engineering courses. The Advanced Medical and Dental Institute offers services and research in Medical and Dental Sciences.
The facilities that USM provides for the students include:

Accommodation Students can opt for on-campus accommodation or off-campus accommodation. On-campus accommodation is offered as a single-room or a twin-sharing room with common bathrooms, cafeteria, laundry room, sports facility, study room, pantry and grocery stores. Rental for on campus accommodation is from USD30–USD75 per month (without meals). Off-Campus Accommodation is the rental of private accommodation within walking distance and which is also available within 3 km in radius. Most of the condominiums/ apartments are equipped with 3 bedrooms, air-conditioned, grocery stores, gymnasium, swimming pool, tennis/badminton courts and laundry shop. Rental for off-campus accommodation is from USD75−USD125 per month (not including utility bills) for each room.
USM provides various services to its students such as hostel accommodation, counselling/motivational guidance, sport and recreational amenities like soccer fields, 8-lane synthetic running track, an Astroturf hockey stadium and an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Cultural events and activities are organised at the Cultural Hall to foster closer ties among students. There are also various clubs and societies that cater to a wide array of interests. These include the Political Science Society, Computer Science Club, Indian Cultural Club, Navigator Society, Astronomy Club, Debating & Public Speaking Club, and Mass Communication Club to name a few. The Counselling Unit at USM offers support services to help develop students’ potential and capabilities.
Besides contributing to the national research effort and advancement of knowledge in general, the university has also taken steps to identify and periodically assess areas of research which are deserving of special support, in order to compete more effectively for external funds. In USM’s bid to provide better incentives for the development of new products and processes by its staff, it has recently drawn up specific rules governing the patenting and commercialisation of research results.
